POSITION SUMMARY

This Paralegal Assistant position is a full-time, non-exempt role based in either our Kansas City, MO or Overland Park, KS office. This position is responsible for proactively providing support to the attorneys in the Pro Bono practice group, as well as providing direct support to clients served by that group. The successful individual will be working in a dynamic environment that requires excellent organization, handling a multitude of tasks simultaneously, and independent thinking and self-direction. This individual should expect to have significant contact with the Family Court clients of the firm, and be able to assist in the effective representation of those individuals by the Pro Bono practice group.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support work pertaining to cases assigned from the Kansas City, Missouri Family Court.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with attorneys, clients and related parties.
  • Assist in drafting pleadings and notices, as applicable.
  • Attend client meetings and court proceedings.
  • Advocate effectively for clients at Family Support Team and other meetings.
  • Identify and report significant issues from meetings attended to attorney handling the matter.
  • Review and organize court and client documents.
  • Calendar hearings, meetings and deadlines related to Family Court cases.
  • Manage case calendar to coordinate all related meetings and court hearings.
  • Prepare and maintain case files.
  • Open new matters electronically for processing by our conflicts department.
  • File documents related to cases in our document management system.
  • Research public and court records, as needed, to assist in data gathering.
  • Track and record time to ensure services provided are appropriately charged.


QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

  • Experience in the legal field preferred, especially experience with Family Court matters.
  • Undergraduate degree and/or experience in social work preferred.
  • Knowledge of community resources available for client helpful.
  • Execution-oriented, self-starter, and self-navigator who can prioritize tasks and balance the demands of multiple cases.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated organizational abilities, and proactive business style.
  • Microsoft Office skills required.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Position is generally sedentary in nature; involves sitting most of the time, but may involve the need for inter-office mobility for brief periods of time.
  • Ability to occasionally or routinely lift up to 10 – 20 lbs.
  • Ability to efficiently communicate.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions required.
  • Ability to see and read PC screens, detect color coding, read fine print, and/or normal type size print.
